Surprisingly enough, that's not the only Golden Age story with Nazi Mayans...(sorry, it's a long post, scroll on down...)
Well, what you can't tell about this story without context is that they were actually a Mayan/German community that dated back to the days of the conquistadors, and automatically allied with the Nazis regardless of the long-term separation...
